Cars That Get Stolen The Most

4 Aug

The blinged-out Cadillac Escalade SUV, a favorite of A-listers like Tiger Woods, is once again the vehicle voted most likely to be stolen, according to an insurance industry group.

The F-250 crew cab pickup, Infiniti G37 luxury sedan, Dodge Charger with its high-power HEMI engine and Chevrolet Corvette Z06 round out the list of the top five vehicles most likely to be the subject of insurance theft claims. Least likely targets of thieves are family vehicles like the Volvo S80, Saturn Vue and Nissan Murano, Honda Pilot and Subaru Impreza.

The Highway Loss Data Institute, which is part of the Arlington-based Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, calculated theft claim rates for vehicles from the 2007-2009 model years. The data reports thefts per insured vehicles on the road.

The Escalade, which starts at $62,495, has ranked as the most-stolen in six of the last seven reports. A theft claim is filed for one out of every 100 insured Escalades, the group said, and the average insurance payout is $11,934. That compares with an average of $6,883 for all vehicles.

Almost one in every four Escalade theft claims is for $40,000 or more. Escalades are equipped with antitheft ignition immobilizers that prevent them from being started without a special key, but that doesn’t prevent some thieves from hauling them away on flatbed trucks, said Kim Hazelbaker, senior vice president of the Highway Loss Data Institute.

“Thieves are after chrome, horsepower and HEMIs,” she said.

Large SUVs like the Escalade have the highest overall theft losses, with large pickups second. Hazelbaker said trucks are targeted for various reasons. In addition to their looks, large pickups can be used for work or they might be carrying valuable tools or cargo.

Deepika Starring in Dostana 2

2 Aug

Mumbai, Aug. 2 — Wake wakey my walnut cookies! Rise forth and shine, for here I am, to drive away your Monday morning blues with some hot-and-spicy nuggets from glamour gaon. I know you must be getting withdrawal symptoms, at not finding my column yesterday. My apologies for the unannounced change in plans. Khair, cheer up and read on my sweetums, for your dose of daily goss.

For starters, a trade types khabru just buzzed to inform me that Karan Johar’s Dostana 2 will be hotter than the first. Yeah, I do know that Katrina Kaif will sizzle on the screen with Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham…

But that’s not all.Suna hai, there’s place for another heroine in the storyline and director Tarun Mansukhani has conveyed to KJo his khwaish of casting Deepika Padukone in it. Apparently, the nirmata has even discussed the part with Deepi darling, and talks about dates and money are on.

And before you think it’s a cameo a la Priyanka Chopra, I must tell you that it’s not. My informer claims that it’s a substantial part with considerably good screen time. Now, it remains to be seen what kinda interaction Kat and Deepi share on the sets in case the latter signs up for the Dostana sequel.

More so since Deepi declined Anurag Basu’s Silence with Ranbir Kapoor when the director was considering Kat for the other leading character in the movie. Dekhte hain aage aage kya hota hai. What say Kat and Deepi?

Unlocking An Iphone Was Never So Easy

2 Aug

Jailbreaking your iPhone was never easy, but a new tool called JailbreakMe promises to change that. It lets you unlock an iOS 4.O device effortlessly. The free online-based tool, and instructions, come just days after jailbreaking your iPhone was declared legal  by the U.S. Copyright Office. Jailbreaking your iPhone lets you install various non Apple-vetted applications to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.

The hack is accessible to anyone through JailbreakMe.com, via the Mobile Safari browser, and can be used with an iPhone 4, 3GS and 3G running iOS 4 and 4.0.1 (the signal bars update). Until now, jailbreaking your iPhone involved having the device connected to a computer, in a painstaking process that put off some of the more novice users. JailbreakMe makes hacking your iPhone much easier, as it’s a browser-based solution and requires no additional artifices.

Jailbreaking Through Its Paces

To test how simple jailbreaking using JailbreakMe is, I decided to use my second-generation iPod Touch and give it a go. Before you decide to follow this process with your iPhone or iPad, keep in mind that despite the legality of this action, Apple is still against it. The company reminded users last week that jailbreaking your iOS device voids your warranty, and you won’t get free repairs.

I pointed the iPod touch’s Mobile Safari browser to JailbreakMe.com, and started the process by sliding the button on the screen (which looks like the iOS lock screen). The hack started downloading, and after a couple of minutes, it began installing. A few more minutes later, the iPod touch was jailbroken and the Cydia Store app was installed. The whole process took less than minutes on a regular Wi-Fi connection.

Some Users Report Problems

Early reports on Twitter and on the Web say that some iPhone 4 owners who used JailbreakMe to hack their phones are having problems with FaceTime and multimedia messaging services (MMS). Comex, the creator of the service, said he is busy to fix these issues as soon as possible. Meanwhile, this site has a potential temporary fix.

The JailbreakMe site also had several issues this morning, as high demand on the servers has put a strain on the service. The Cydia Store (the store for jailbroken apps) also had several hiccups during my testing with the freshly-jailbroken iPod touch.

Taking Precautions

The jailbreaking process from JailbreakMe is not permanent. As long as you sync your iOS device with iTunes before you jailbreak it, you will be able to remove the hack by simply using the restore feature. If anything goes wrong, don’t hesitate to use it.
